iPhone 13 memory: how much do you need?
The new iPhones are available this year with more storage than ever. The iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini start at 128GB of storage. Last year that was still half: 64GB. The iPhone 13 Pro (Max) comes with a new 1TB storage configuration; the tallest in an iPhone ever.
When it comes to storage capacity, it is important to make the right choice right away. The internal memory of the iPhone 13 models cannot be expanded (as with all previous iPhones). So you can’t put a micro SD card in it, as with many Android phones.
128GB: iPhone 13 + iPhone 13 Pro
The storage starts at 128GB. With the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini, that was still half. Although 128GB is the least possible storage, most people will be satisfied with this storage capacity.
That’s especially true if you have an iCloud subscription, so that you don’t store your photos and videos locally, for example. This leaves enough space for your apps and games. Not using iCloud? Then take a good look at how much storage you currently need. But if you don’t plan to store a large amount of photos, videos, movies and/or music locally, 128GB of memory is more than enough.
256GB: iPhone 13 + iPhone 13 Pro
Do you not have a subscription to a cloud service such as iCloud, or do you want to store large amounts of photos, series and music locally? Certainly if you also regularly record 4K videos, or shoot photos in Apple ProRAW, you can run into problems with 128GB of memory after a while.
With a storage space of 256GB, you have enough storage to store a large amount of photos, videos, and music. You probably don’t need to clean up apps either: you download the latest games without worrying about whether there is still storage space.
You can also choose an iPhone with 256GB (or more) if you plan to record videos in ProRes with the iPhone 13 Pro (Max). This is Apple’s professional video codec. The iPhone 13 Pro is the first to record videos in this popular file format for creators, but ProRes recording in 4K only works on models with 256GB or more.
512GB: iPhone 13 + iPhone 13 Pro
For the first time, the 512GB storage option is also available with the two cheaper devices. This option is for the heavy user. For the person who doesn’t use cloud services, but who regularly takes videos in 4K, or stores thousands of photos locally on their iPhone.
With 512GB, you probably never have to worry about your storage space. Only choose this option if you recognize yourself in the examples above, because for other users this is an unnecessary amount of storage space and a waste of money.
1TB: iPhone 13 Pro
The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max are configurable with more storage than ever: 1TB. This equals 1000 gigabytes. If you prefer to store your files locally and plan to photograph or film a lot in Apple ProRAW or Apple ProRes, then 1TB is what you want.
Another argument for configuring your iPhone 13 Pro with a terabyte of storage is if you plan to use your iPhone as a sort of external hard drive. You can also manage all kinds of files with your iPhone. You do this via the Files app.
