iPhone 13 Pro vs iPhone 15 Pro: Is an upgrade worth it?

The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are Apple’s latest top models, but are they worth the upgrade if you already have an iPhone 13 Pro?

In addition to similarities, the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro also have many differences. And it is very personal whether those differences are worth switching. To help you with that choice, we have listed the most important differences for you.

1. Housing: titanium and action button

The design of the iPhone 15 Pro is similar to that of the 13 Pro, only the 15 Pro has more rounded corners and the housing is made of titanium. This makes the housing strong, durable and light, and has a stylish brushed appearance.

In addition, the 15 Pro and Pro Max no longer have a mute button, but an action button has been replaced. The dust and water resistance is the same for both devices (IP68).

2. Screen: Always-On and Dynamic Island

The screen sizes of the 13 Pro and 15 Pro remain the same at 6.1-inch for the Pro and 6.7-inch for the Pro Max. The 15 Pro/Max screens are distinguished by Always-On, 120Hz ProMotion, Dynamic Island and a brightness of up to 2000 nits for outdoor use.

Furthermore, the edges of the iPhone 15 Pro are slightly slimmer, allowing the screen to display slightly more pixels. The 15 Pro has a resolution of 2556 x 1179 pixels (13 Pro: 2532 x 1170 pixels), the 15 Pro Max has a resolution of 2796 x 1290 (13 Pro Max: 2778 x 1284).

3. Performance: A17 Pro vs A15 Bionic

When unveiling the A17 Pro, Apple emphasized comparisons with the A16 Bionic. The year-over-year performance gains are getting smaller and smaller, but Apple says the A17 Pro is the fastest mobile CPU yet.

The A15 or A16 Bionic and A17 Pro are all more than powerful enough for almost anyone. For completeness, here are a few A17 Pro stats versus the A16 Bionic:

  • Up to 20% faster GPU than the A16 Bionic
  • Up to 10% faster CPU than the A16 Bionic
  • Up to 2x faster neural engine

4. Battery: watch video a little longer

With the iPhone 15 Pro you can watch video for an hour longer with a full battery than with the 13 Pro. When listening to audio, the 13 Pro and 15 Pro both score equally well.

6. Connection: from Lightning to USB-C

The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max no longer have a Lightning but a USB-C connection. This also supports higher transfer speeds of up to 10 Gbps (USB 3) and makes it possible to record video directly to an external SSD, for example. The transfer speed on the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max via the Lightning connection remains at 480 Mbps.

7. Safety: accident detection and satellite connection

SOS emergency notification is also available on the iPhone 13 Pro (Max), but the iPhone 15 Pro (Max) has two more safety features: SOS emergency notification via satellite and accident detection.

Conclusion: iPhone 13 Pro vs iPhone 15 Pro

The top models of the latest iPhone certainly have more to offer. However, a number of improvements are not spectacular for the average user (including housing and screen), while others are more worthwhile (including camera, connection and security).

All in all, an upgrade is not worth it in our opinion. You pay a considerable amount for a handful of improvements. Some of those improvements are barely noticeable, the rest of the improvements are not worth such a high amount. The iPhone 13 Pro (Max) is currently still a top device and a lot more affordable.
