‘iPhone 14 Pro gets titanium casing’ (and will be sturdier than ever)

The iPhone 14 Pro seems to get a titanium housing and is therefore a lot sturdier than current models. However, the material also has a drawback. iPhoned explains why.

iPhone 14 Pro gets titanium housing

It seems that Apple is going to tinker with the choice of materials for the iPhones. The iPhone 14 Pro (Max) is rumored to have a titanium housing. The American investment bank JP Morgan Chase, among others, has already sent this rumor to the world. Changing the material could be one of the “big changes” in the design of the iPhone 14 Pro.

The iPhone is currently still made of stainless steel and/or aluminum. An iPhone made of titanium has never appeared. Apple does use the material for other products. Think, for example, of the Apple Watch and Apple Card, a credit card that is not yet available in the Netherlands.

Titanium has a number of advantages over stainless steel. It is a lot sturdier and therefore less prone to bending. In addition, it is often a bit lighter than steel.

Titanium does not only have advantages, because there are also a few disadvantages to the material. It is more expensive than, for example, stainless steel and even the hard titanium is sensitive to light scratches. On the other hand, you will rarely see deeper scratches on a titanium housing.

More about the iPhone 14

It seems that Apple will again launch four iPhone models, with two cheaper and two more advanced versions. The ‘mini’ will be replaced by an iPhone 14 Max, which, like the largest Pro model, has a 6.7-inch screen. These are the expected models:

  • iPhone 14 (6.1″)
  • iPhone 14 Max (6.7 inches)
  • iPhone 14 Pro (6.1″)
  • iPhone 14 Pro Max (6.7 inches)

The fact that the iPhone 14 Pro will get a titanium housing is not the only change. The iPhone 14 will most likely get a new, contemporary design. Trusted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and the Korean The Elec count on a so-called ‘punch-hole design’ or ‘pill-shaped hole’, but that’s probably only on the Pro models. This means that the two cheaper models (the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max) have a notch design. It is not yet known exactly how small it will be.
