Many people buy a new iPhone every two years. Here are the improvements when you upgrade from the iPhone 14 Pro to the iPhone 16 Pro.
iPhone 14 Pro vs 16 Pro
The iPhone 16 Pro succeeds 2023’s iPhone 15 Pro, adding over 30 new features and improvements. With many users living on a two-year upgrade cycle, many iPhone 14 Pro owners will want to upgrade to the iPhone 16 Pro. For those people, the differences between the two generations will be of interest.
In 2022, Apple unveiled the iPhone 14 Pro as the successor to the iPhone 13 Pro, featuring an always-on display, Dynamic Island, a 48-megapixel camera, the A16 Bionic chip, and longer battery life. Two years later, the iPhone 16 Pro comes with a number of upgrades, of which we highlight the seven most important ones for you. This is still based on rumors, because the iPhone 16 series will only be announced during the Apple event unveiled on Monday, September 9.
1. Design
The iPhone 16 Pro is expected to feature a titanium frame and slightly rounded corners that we know from the iPhone 15 Pro models. The action button from the iPhone 15 Pro models will also be seen on the iPhone 16 Pro. In addition, the new capture button will be added. The switch from the iPhone 14 Pro to the iPhone 16 Pro also means that you will go from a Lightning port to a USB-C port and that you can choose from other colors.
2. Dimensions
The iPhone 16 Pro (Max) will be slightly thicker and longer than the iPhone 14 Pro (Max). The width will remain virtually the same and the weight will be slightly lower. For the sake of completeness, we will list the dimensions below each other:
iPhone 14 Pro | iPhone 16 Pro |
7.85mm thick | 8.25mm thick (0.4mm thicker) |
iPhone 14 Pro: 147.5 mm high iPhone 14 Pro Max: 160.7mm high |
iPhone 16 Pro: 149.6 mm high iPhone 16 Pro Max: 163.0 mm high |
iPhone 14 Pro: 71.5 mm wide iPhone 14 Pro Max: 77.6 mm wide |
iPhone 16 Pro: 71.45 mm wide iPhone 16 Pro Max: 77.58 mm wide |
iPhone 14 Pro: 206 g iPhone 14 Pro Max: 240 g |
iPhone 16 Pro: 194 g iPhone 16 Pro Max: 225 g |
3. Screen
Both iPhone 16 Pro models are expected to feature larger displays than their predecessors, making the iPhone 16 Pro Max the largest iPhone ever. There are also reportedly improvements to the underlying OLED technology and thinner bezels than the iPhone 15 Pro (Max). The iPhone 14 Pro has a 6.1-inch display, while the iPhone 14 Pro Max has a 6.7-inch display. The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max measure 6.3 inches and 6.9 inches, respectively.
4. Performance
The iPhone 16 Pro models are rumored to get a lot more processing power, including a 3nm silicon chip from Apple and 33 percent more memory. The iPhone 14 Pro (Max) has an A16 Bionic chip, the iPhone 16 Pro (Max) gets an A18 chip. Furthermore, the amount of RAM for the entire iPhone 16 series goes to 8GB, because this is necessary to support Apple Intelligence.
5. Connections
Connectivity also gets a major upgrade on iPhone 16 Pro. For example, there is an improved 5G modem (Snapdragon X75 compared to Snapdragon X65) and support for WiFi 7 (compared to WiFi 6). Thanks to the second generation Ultra Wideband chip, connections from up to three times further away are possible.
6. Cameras
The iPhone 16 Pro models get a bunch of camera improvements, like a larger sensor for the main camera, a 48-megapixel sensor on the ultra-wide camera and the dedicated capture button on the side. The iPhone 16 Pro (Max) also has a 5x optical zoom (compared to 3x on the iPhone 14 Pro (Max)). Video recording can now be done in 4K at 60 fps (compared to 4K at 30 fps).
7. Battery and charging
Given the larger dimensions of the iPhone 16 Pro models, larger batteries will also fit in. The iPhone 16 Pro Max will therefore probably get the biggest battery upgrade. For the iPhone 16 Pro, we expect an increase from 3200 mAh to 3355 mAh compared to the iPhone 14 Pro. For the 16 Pro Max, an increase from 4323 mAh to 4676 mAh compared to the 14 Pro Max. Charging will probably be done with a maximum of 40 watts for the new Pro models, where this was stuck at 27 watts for the iPhone 14 Pro (Max). Charging via MagSafe will probably go from 15 watts to 20 watts.
iPhone 14 Pro vs 16 Pro: Conclusion
These seven improvements will not be a reason for everyone to switch immediately. An additional reason could be the new Apple Intelligence. Although it is not yet clear when we can finally expect that in the Netherlands, it is certain that you need an iPhone from the 16 series for it. If you want to be prepared for the future, then switch from the iPhone 14 Pro (Max) to the iPhone 16 Pro (Max) right away!
