iPhone 15 Pro gets titanium frame, but what are the advantages?

The Pro iPhones have had stainless steel edges for years, which give the device a premium look. With the iPhone 15 Pro, Apple exchanges this material for titanium, it seems. Why does Apple choose titanium?

iPhone 15 Pro titanium

This year’s iPhone 15 Pro models are rumored to be the first iPhones with a titanium chassis. This marks the end of the stainless steel era that began with the 2017 iPhone X.

Several sources have reported that the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will get a new titanium design. It was reported, among others, by Apple leaker ShrimpApplePro. Also Apple analyst Jeff Pu van Haitong Intl Tech Research confirmed this rumour.

Advantages of titanium

Compared to stainless steel, a titanium housing has a few advantages. The most important is the improved durability. Titanium is one of the strongest metals and will provide great protection for the iPhone against scratches and damage. This way your device will stay like new for longer.

And while titanium improves the durability of your iPhone, it also makes your device less heavy. It is a very light material, much lighter than stainless steel. The metal used in the iPhone 14 series makes them noticeably heavy. A titanium housing should ensure that the iPhone 15 Pro (Max) is less heavy in the hand.

However, if the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max use titanium, they won’t be lighter than the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus. With the aluminum frame, they are probably even lighter (but less durable). However, a titanium iPhone 15 Pro (Max) will feel lighter than the iPhone 14 Pro (Max).

More expensive

A titanium frame also has disadvantages. The material is more expensive than stainless steel or aluminum, so hopefully we won’t see this reflected in the price. The iPhone 15 Pro will not be the first Apple product made of titanium. Titanium was also used in the 2001 PowerBook G4. The Apple Watch Series 5 and newer are also available in a titanium version.
