iPhone 16 camera becomes more light sensitive (and that’s really nice)

According to rumors, the camera of the iPhone 16 will get new sensors that are more light-sensitive. That has a few big advantages.

All four models of the iPhone 15 are rumored to get the new 48MP camera found in the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max this year. But it looks like the iPhone 16 Pro will get the better camera next year.

According to usually reliable Apple expert Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone 16 Pro will have a different kind of sensor. This sensor will not be the same as the ‘regular’ iPhone 16, but will still come from Sony.

Kuo does not elaborate on which sensor it is exactly, but we can draw a few conclusions. Normally, in a sensor, the diodes and transistors are combined in one layer. In the new version of the sensor, Sony has separated the diodes and transistors. This allows, among other things, the photodiodes (this is the part that captures the light from the lens) to become a lot larger.

A recent promotional video from Sony shows that by placing the diodes and transistors on their own layer, they can both become a lot larger. That means the diode can capture more light and the transistor ensures that you see less noise in your photos. According to Sony, roughly twice as much light can be collected. That means that the iPhone 16 camera can become a lot more light sensitive.

And this is what you get

If a camera can capture more light, that’s good news. You notice this especially when you take pictures when it starts to get dark. For example, in the evening at home with the light of a table lamp or during your evening walk with the dog. Also nice: your iPhone also gets better at shooting moving objects in low light.

In addition, the dynamic range improves. This is the difference between the lightest and darkest part of a photo. It is often quite difficult for a camera to take a good picture with a lot of bright light and dark shadows. You then lose a lot of details in, for example, the shadows (you will see a black spot). You can see this, for example, when taking a photo during sunset or at a concert with many light effects.

If the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max do indeed become much more light-sensitive thanks to these sensors, the camera of the 2024 iPhone will be a lot better. It would be nice if Apple could also add some extra zoom.
