iPhone 16 gets new buttons (but you don’t really want that)

According to a new report, the iPhone 16 will have new buttons on both sides. We will tell you why that is not good news.

iPhone 16 gets new buttons

Apple is said to have ordered a large number of parts for the buttons on the iPhone 16 series from a Taiwanese supplier. According to the Economic Daily News Advanced Semiconductor Engineering is the supplier. The order would consist of parts used to integrate capacitive components with two haptic motors.

According to the report, Apple is replacing the existing physical buttons on the iPhone 16 on both sides with touch-sensitive buttons that provide haptic feedback. These types of buttons detect pressure and mimic pressing a physical button. This is done via a haptic engine (or Taptic Engine) that generates vibrations.

Physical or touch sensitive buttons

The very first iPhone 16 rumors were already about touch-sensitive buttons. However, over the years the project was scrapped and Apple returned mechanical buttons for the iPhone 16.

As a result, most rumors assume that the iPhone 16 models will get mechanical buttons, including the new fourth button. According to The Information Apple is adding the capture button to all iPhone 16 models and the button is mechanical instead of capacitive. The button could respond to pressure and touch.

The capture button is used for taking photos and videos. You can zoom in and out by swiping left and right on the button. You can focus by pressing lightly and activate a recording by pressing harder.

Very late for the iPhone 16

According to the recent report, the capacitive parts will go into production in the third quarter of this year, which is unusually late for the upcoming iPhone models. So they may be for the iPhone 17 line rather than this year’s iPhone 16 models. But it would not be the first time that things have changed quite far into the process.

If the iPhone 16 does get these new buttons, that is actually not good news. For starters, operating it with gloves on is virtually impossible. If you have special gloves with a touch part, it should work, but it is certainly not ideal. Even if you have the iPhone in your pocket, you can no longer adjust the volume through the fabric of your pants or jacket. We have not yet been able to discover any real advantages of such buttons.
