Apple has officially announced the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus. It has become a very interesting model and iPhoned lists everything you need to know about it.
iPhone 16 is finally official
Finally, the time has come. After months of rumors, Apple has unveiled its new flagship with much fanfare. This makes the iPhone 16 officially Apple’s newest phone. Just like in previous years, there is also a larger version of the same device, called the iPhone 16 Plus. These two devices only differ in screen size and battery, otherwise they are identical. iPhoned catch you up on everything new about the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus.
Now also with action button
It has become a tradition. The Pro iPhone gets a new function, and a year later it is the regular iPhone’s turn. Think of the 48 megapixel camera and the Dynamic Island. That is the case again now. Last year, the iPhone 15 Pro got the so-called action button instead of the silent switch. You can assign self-chosen actions to this button.
By default, you can use it to silence your iPhone, but you can also activate a Focus, turn on the flashlight and much more. This button is now also celebrating its introduction on the iPhone 16 and does exactly the same thing there as on the 16 Pro. After a year of use, we can already tell you that it is quite handy – especially if you are the kind of person who leaves your iPhone on silent all the time.
Camera Control
At the same time, Apple is also breaking with this tradition this year. Because one new function is coming to both the iPhone 16 and the Pro. Another new button is celebrating its introduction on the iPhone 16. The so-called Camera Control button is there specifically for the iPhone’s camera app. With this, Apple almost turns its phone into a real camera.
If you’ve ever used a DSLR camera, you’ll already know more or less how the capture button works. If you press it lightly, it focuses on your subject. If you press harder, you’ll take a photo. But that’s not all. The button is touch-sensitive, so you can also use gestures. For example, you can swipe on the button to zoom in.
The new A18 chip
Under the hood of the iPhone 16 is – how could it be otherwise – the A18 chip. Of course, this processor is a lot faster than its predecessor, but where it really excels – and that is no surprise – is AI. The A18 has a new Neural Engine that is fully optimized for use with Apple Intelligence, up to 2x faster for large language models à la ChatGPT. Everything AI-enabled is faster with the A18 chip.
The iPhone 16 is also expected to have more RAM to make AI features work better. Apple didn’t mention that during the presentation, so we’ll wait a bit longer for the first teardown off.
There is a catch to the AI functions, because in the EU we will not get Apple Intelligence for the time being. Apple is in negotiations with the EU about this, but at the moment no one knows when Apple Intelligence will be available in the Netherlands and Belgium. Let’s hope that the two parties will reach an agreement soon.
The iPhone 16 (Plus) runs on iOS 18
A new iPhone comes with a new operating system, so the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus are already running the new iOS 18. In this version, you can customize the Control Panel to your liking and give the home screen a completely unique look. There is also a completely new app called Passwords.
