New design vs old acquaintance
The first thing that stands out of course is the new design of the iPhone 17 Pro Max. This device has a larger camera island and a new back. While the iPhone 16 Pro Max still has to do with the familiar look.
Furthermore, the iPhone 17 Pro Max weighs a little more: 233 grams, while the 16 Pro Max weighs 227 grams. The new Pro Max has an aluminum frame. The 16 Pro Max has a titanium housing.
Both phones use Ceramic Shield, but the 17 Pro Max has Ceramic Shield 2 at the front and on the back Ceramic Shield 1. The 16 Pro Max has both front and behind Ceramic Shield 1.
In terms of colors, the 17 Pro Max is available in silver, orange and deep blue, while the earlier edition was supplied in titanium tones: black, white, gray and beige.
Display: Clearer and scratch resistant
In terms of display, the devices have the same 6.9-inch OLED screen with promotion up to 120 Hz, but the 17 Pro Max achieves a peak clearance of approximately 3,000 nits compared to 2,000 nits in the 16 Pro Max. In addition, the screen of the 17 Pro Max has an anti-reflection coating that the previous model does not have.
A19 Pro vs A18 Pro
Under the hood you will find the A19 Pro with the 17 Pro Max, while the 16 Pro Max runs on the A18 Pro. Interesting is that the 17 Pro Max is equipped with 12 GB Ram compared to 8 GB at the 16 Pro Max.
In terms of storage, the 17 Pro Max goes to 2 TB, while the 16 Pro Max is limited to 1 TB. The 16 Pro Max does not also have the new ‘Vapor Chamber’ cooling. This means that the iPhone 17 Pro Max gets hot less quickly than the 16 Pro Max with heavy tasks.
Better selfie camera and telephoto lens
In the camera area, the main and ultra-wide angle are identical (48 MP), but the telephoto lens has received a considerable upgrade with the iPhone 17 Pro Max. It is now also 48 megapixel. With the iPhone 17 Pro Max you can zoom in up to 8x of optical quality. With the 16 Pro Max this is 5 times.
At the front, the 17 Pro Max is supplied with an 18 MP camera with Center Stage (center) and a larger sensor. Switching between portrait position and landscape position is also a lot easier on the iPhone 17 Pro Max. There is still a ‘standard’ 12 MP camera in the 16 Pro Max.
Furthermore, the iPhone 17 Pro Max has the option for making a double recording with videos. As a result, the image of the selfie camera and the camera is used on the back of the iPhone to make a combined video.
Longer battery life and faster charging
With regard to the battery, the 17 Pro Max has a capacity of 5,088 mAh. That is slightly more than the 4,685 mAh of the 16 Pro Max. According to Apple, the new Pro Max achieves up to 37 hours of playing time with videos. This is four hours more than with the iPhone 16 Pro Max.
The loading speed of the 17 Pro Max has also been increased considerably. You can now charge up to a maximum of 40 W (via the cable). That means that your iPhone is half full in about 20 minutes. With the iPhone 16 Pro Max, that is about 27 W. Your iPhone is then half full in about 35 minutes. Both devices can charge with magsafe (25 W).

The iPhone 17 Pro Max has a suggested retail price of 1479 euros. This is with 256 GB storage. The iPhone 16 Pro Max had the same price during the introduction. But this device is now a bit cheaper. Prices now start at around € 1,234.
