iPhone 17 rumors: these are the things we know so far

The latest iPhone 17 rumors reveal more details about what we can expect from next year’s iPhone.

iPhone 17 rumors

The new iPhone 17 rumors come from Apple analyst Jeff Pu. He doesn’t actually say much new about the specifications of the iPhone 17. He largely repeats what he has already reported in the past. This indicates that Apple’s plans have not changed in the meantime.

A narrower Dynamic Island

In terms of design, Pu again says that all iPhone 17 models will have an aluminum design that is more complex than that of the iPhone 16 models. The iPhone 17 Pro Max will also be much narrower Dynamic Islandthe other models retain the current design. The smaller Dynamic Island on the iPhone 17 Pro Max is made possible by a metals technology for the proximity sensor. This can significantly reduce the size of the Face ID sensor.

Improved processors

Pu’s iPhone 17 rumors also say that the A19 and A19 Pro chips will both be manufactured using a new N3P manufacturing process. The N3E process was used for the A18 chips in the iPhone 16 models. This means we can expect better performance and efficiency across the board thanks to higher transistor density on the A19 chips. The iPhone 18 Pro is expected to receive 2nm chips for the first time in 2026.

iPhone 17 Air futuristic

iPhone 17 Air

According to an earlier rumor, Apple has encountered problems with making the iPhone 17 as thin as possible. The thickness of this thin iPhone mainly depends on the battery. The thinner the battery, the thinner the iPhone 17 can become. According to that report, the battery of the iPhone 17 Air would be 6 mm thick. Pu’s iPhone 17 rumors suggest that the iPhone 17 Air itself will only be 6mm thick.

Pu also says that he does not expect the iPhone 17 Air to become a very popular model, due to the technical compromises Apple has to make to realize the ultra-thin design.

The iPhone 6 is the thinnest iPhone ever, with a thickness of only 6.9 mm. The iPhone 6 Plus was 7.1mm thin. The thinnest iPad is the 13-inch iPad Pro at 5.1 mm. The 11-inch M4 iPad Pro is 5.4 mm thin. For comparison: the iPhone 16 (Plus) is 7.8 mm thick, the iPhone 16 Pro (Max) is 8.25 mm. Whether the iPhone 17 Air will indeed only be 6 mm thick as rumors lead us to believe remains to be seen. Of course, a lot can happen in ten months.
