The iPhone 17e is the latest budget iPhone that Apple has released. This new iPhone is cheaper than the iPhone 17, but how big are the (price) differences really? We put them together for you.

Housing

Both the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17e have an aluminum frame and a glass front and back. The iPhone 17 is only slightly larger and heavier than the iPhone 17e, although not much difference: 149.6 x 71.5 x 8 mm and 177 g compared to 146.7 x 71.5 x 7.8 mm and 169 g. Both devices have an action button, but one camera controller can only be found on the iPhone 17.

Screen

At 6.3 inches, the iPhone 17 also has a slightly larger screen than the iPhone 17e (6.1 inches). As a result, the iPhone 17 also has a higher resolution: 1206 x 2622 pixels compared to 1170 x 2532 pixels. Furthermore, the maximum brightness of the iPhone 17 screen with 3000 nits is also a lot higher than that of the iPhone 17e (1200 nits).

The iPhone 17’s screen also features ProMotion, an always-on function and a Dynamic Island instead of a notch. These are all things that are still missing from the iPhone 17e.

Camera

Both iPhones have a 48-megapixel wide-angle camera, but only the iPhone 17 also has a 48-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera. The iPhone 17e cannot match that. Both devices are equipped with the latest portrait mode with focus and depth control, but a macro mode is missing on the iPhone 17e.

As for the selfie camera: the iPhone 17 has an 18-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera with center point, the iPhone 17e has to make do with a 12-megapixel wide-angle camera (without center point). Dual Capture is also missing on the iPhone 17e.

Performance

Both iPhone 17 models perform at a similar level. They both run on an A19 chip and have 8 GB of RAM. Yet there is still a small difference. The A19 in the iPhone 17 has a GPU with 5 cores, the A19 in the iPhone 17e has one with only 4 cores. This will make for slightly slower graphics performance while gaming, but most people won’t really notice a difference.

Battery

The battery in the new iPhone 17e, with a capacity of 4005 mAh, is slightly more powerful than that in the iPhone 17 (3692 mAh). However, with 30 hours of video playback, the iPhone 17 lasts slightly longer than the iPhone 17e (maximum 26 hours of video playback).

Charging is also slightly faster on the iPhone 17: 50 percent in 20 minutes compared to 50 percent in 30 minutes. The iPhone 17 charges wirelessly at 25 watts and the iPhone 17e at 15 watts.

Conclusion: iPhone 17 vs iPhone 17e

The iPhone 17 is superior to the iPhone 17e in virtually all respects. It has more and better cameras, a better screen with Promotion, a longer battery life and charging is a lot faster. This does not mean that the iPhone 17e performs poorly. The iPhone 17 simply performs slightly better.

The biggest plus of the iPhone 17e is the slightly lower price. However, as far as we are concerned, the difference in price with the iPhone 17 is not yet large enough. If you want to buy a new iPhone right now, the iPhone 17 is the best choice. If you can wait a while, the iPhone 17e is not a bad choice if the price has dropped a bit.
