Apple’s Self Service Repair program is now available in Belgium and seven other countries. What’s the use of this service?
Self Service Repair Program: This is it
The Self Service Repair program means – as the name may suggest – that you can repair your Apple device yourself. If your screen is broken or your battery needs to be replaced, you will be sent a repair kit to do it yourself. As a result, you no longer have to go to an Apple Store!
These packages contain the tools and necessary parts to repair your iPhone yourself at home. These are the same parts and tools used by Apple repair technicians. Remarkable: you only rent the tools from Apple, after the repair you have to return them. Of course you can keep the necessary parts yourself.
This is how the Self Service Repair program works
Do you have a crack in your phone screen? Or is your battery in urgent need of replacement? Then you can now use the program in Belgium (and seven other European countries). You order the individual parts on the Apple site to repair your device at home.
If you do not have the necessary tools at home, it is possible to rent a tool kit for a week for 59.95 euros. The package will then be sent to you free of charge, but you will of course still have to pay separately for the new parts you need for the repair. If you send your old parts back to Apple, you also get a discount.
The Self Service Repair Program: Why?
With the program, Apple mainly tries to focus on sustainability. The service encourages customers to return old parts and to give their phones a second lease of life with new parts. For example, old appliances may last longer and old parts are recycled.
According to Apple, the service is mainly intended for people who already have experience in replacing technical parts. Don’t have this? Then it is probably about the same price to have your iPhone made by Apple itself. The prices for the parts at home are the same, in addition to the price of the repair kit.
Service only available to a limited extent
The service was already available in the United States, but is now also coming to Europe. Apple’s Self Service Repair is available first in Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom. It is not yet clear when the program will come to the Netherlands.
The service is not available for every Apple device: Apple offers repair kits for the iPhone 13 and iPhone 12 series and MacBooks with an M1 chip. Is one of your other Apple devices broken? Then you still have to go to the Apple Store for repair.
