After ‘charging’, the iPhone then gave the message that Apple Pay could not be set up when you wanted to use the function. After further inspection, the NFC chip in the iPhone was found to no longer function. The complaints mainly occurred among owners of the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Apple has now responded to the problem. In an internal memo to their service employees, Apple says that an iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max have problems with wireless charging in BMW cars in ‘some’ cases. This can cause the NFC chip to (temporarily) no longer work. The memo provides no further information about what exactly is the cause.

Apple has said the fix will come in a software update later this year. iOS 17.1 has just been released and it does not solve the problem. The fix will probably come in one of the next updates. This will be iOS 17.1.1 or iOS 17.2. Apple advises iPhone owners not to use wireless charging in a BMW at this time.

By the way, Apple has told the technical department to restart the NFC chip if an iPhone has problems after charging in a BMW. If that does not solve the problem, the iPhone must be sent for repair, Apple said.
