When the eyes are irritated, they itch and burn. They tear, swell and you get red eyes. This happens when there is too little tear fluid or the tear film evaporates too quickly.

  • According to netdoktor.de, women suffer from irritated eyes than men due to the female sex hormone estrogen.
  • Older people also get more irritated eyes than young people due to the reduced tear production.

According to NetDoktor.de, there are causes. If the irritated eyes suddenly occur, it could be due to the following factors:

  • The room air may be too dry because of the heating.
  • You suffer from the Office-Eye syndrome: That means you have stared on the television, computer or smartphone screen for too long. In front of a screen we blink only once or twice instead of ten to fifteen times a minute as usual and thus irritate our eyes.
  • You were exposed to drafts or air conditioning.
  • Exhaust gases, ozone in the atmosphere or smoke have irritated your eyes.

  • You have worn contact lenses with low oxygen permeability for too long.

Measures: You can do that in irritated eyes

Irritated eyes are very uncomfortable. So that you stop itchy, you can use the following home remedies.

  • Cool your eyes with a damp washcloth or a cooling pack.

  • Dark the room and avoid the bright smartphone or computer light.

  • Leave fresh air into the room.

  • Go to the fresh air. Avoid forests and meadows if you react allergically to pollen or grasses.

If you have irritated eyes every now and then, you can also take preventive measures:

  • If you work a lot on the screen, get used to getting up once an hour, going to the window and looking at the distance.
  • If you heat winter, you should increase the humidity. For example, place a bowl of water on the heating.
  • Avoid places with air conditioning, with direct draft, with cigarette smoke or exhaust gases.

  • Don’t wear your contact lenses too long and take them out as soon as you are at home.
  • Make sure you drink enough water.
