Do you use Apple Maps or Google Maps regularly? It is better to disable these two features immediately in both Apple Maps and Google Maps!
Features in Apple Maps and Google Maps
With the arrival of navigation services such as Apple Maps and Google Maps, it has become increasingly easier to reach your destination in recent years. Regular updates are released for both applications, introducing improvements and more features. However, not all functions in Apple Maps and Google Maps are useful, because they sometimes cause you to take a completely different route.
Two of those features are highway and toll road avoidance, which you can enable with both Apple Maps and Google Maps. These settings are useful if, for example, you are abroad and would rather not pay tolls, but are otherwise rarely useful. In fact, they often make you take a long detour to avoid highways and toll roads. Do you want to prevent that? This is how you switch the functions off again!

Avoid highways and toll roads
Has Apple Maps or Google Maps been showing strange routes lately when you enter a destination? In that case, chances are you have enabled highway or toll road avoidance. These functions are turned off by default with Apple Maps and Google Maps, but can sometimes be activated accidentally or due to a software error. To turn off highway and toll road avoidance in Apple Maps:
- Open ‘Settings’ on your iPhone;
- Scroll down and tap ‘Apps’;
- Choose ‘Cards’;
- Under ‘Route’, tap ‘Car’;
- Under ‘Avoid’, turn off the switch behind ‘Toll roads’;
- Finally, turn off ‘Highways’.
Do you prefer to use Google Maps? Like Apple Maps, Google Maps has features to avoid highways and toll roads. These settings are disabled by default, but it is advisable to check again. This way you can be sure that you take the fastest route to your destination. Here you will find the settings for Google Maps:
- Open ‘Goole Maps’;
- Tap your profile photo at the top right of the screen;
- Choose ‘Settings’;
- Go to ‘Navigation’;
- Under ‘Route options’, turn off the switch behind ‘Avoid toll roads’;
- Finally, do the same for ‘Avoid highways’.

More about Apple Maps and Google Maps
Have you disabled highway and toll road avoidance? Apple Maps and Google Maps show the fastest way to reach your destination. In certain situations, avoiding these roads is a useful addition, but in general it is better to disable the features in Apple Maps and Google Maps. Avoiding highways in particular can result in a much longer travel time.
Have you disabled the functions in Apple Maps and Google Maps, but are you still being diverted via a route other than the highway? In that case, the highway may be closed due to roadworks or an accident. Both navigation services take the road situation into account when calculating the fastest route.
