Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer revealed

Jeep is expanding its US delivery range with two new models: the Wagoneer and the Grand Wagoneer. Although none are bigger than the other, the new Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer are even bigger than the Grand Cherokee L presented this year!

In the United States, Jeep is adding the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer to its delivery range, SUVs that have long unused names stuck by Jeep. We know the model name, a luxurious variant of the Cherokee, but it is the Grand Wagoneer (SJ) that makes the blood flow faster among the Jeep connoisseurs. The arrival of the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer may cause some confusion. Although Jeep already showed a production-ready-looking concept car in September 2020 with the Grand Wagoneer Concept that served as a precursor to the two newcomers, Jeep simply pulled the curtain off the Grand Cherokee L in January this year. That needs some explanation.

Jeep Grand Cherokee L

The Grand Cherokee L is a 5.2 meter long SUV with a self-supporting body, a car with seven rows of seats that will soon have a slightly shorter Grand Cherokee, without L addition, next to it. The Grand Cherokee (L) should be seen as opponents of cars such as the Ford Explorer and Kia Telluride. The Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer that Jeep is presenting today are both 5.44 meters long and have a 3.12 meter wheelbase. A lot longer than the Grand Cherokee L. In addition, the pair stands on a ladder chassis and therefore do not have a self-supporting carriage. Although the two newcomers are basically the same car, the Grand Wagoneer has more shimmer and thicker powertrains than the Wagoneer. The Wagoneer competes with cars such as the Ford Expedition and Chevrolet Tahoe. The Grand Wagoneer targets SUVs such as the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator.

The basis of both the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer is largely based on that of cars like the 1500 of Stellantis-rival Ram. However, the Wagoneers have independent rear suspension and therefore no rigid rear axle. From the outside, Jeep’s newcomers look very much like the Grand Wagoneer Concept presented in 2020, entirely as expected. In fact, the Wagoneer differs from that study model only in microscopic details. The Grand Wagoneer has more chrome on the outside and a slightly different front bumper. Remarkably, both the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer do not have lighting that runs across the entire width of the rear, whereas the Grand Wagoneer Concept did. Also, the illuminated grille of that study model does not reach the production stage.

What applies to the exterior also applies to the interior of the Wagoneers. That also resembles that of the Grand Wagoneer Concept like two drops of water. The Wagoneer has a 10.3-inch digital instrumentation as standard, the Grand Wagoneer will get a larger 12.3-inch model. In addition, the Wagoneer only has a 10.1-inch infotainment system while the Grand Wagoneer has a copy that measures 12-inches. That Grand Wagoneer has, just like the Grand Wagoneer Concept, a 10.3-inch screen with which, among other things, the climate control can be controlled. The Grand Wagoneer is also available with a third display that, indeed, just like the Grand Wagoneer Concept, is placed directly in front of the passenger in the dashboard. The interior of the Grand Wagoneer can be finished with nicer-looking materials than that of the Wagoneer.

Both Wagoneers are four-wheel drives, although the Wagoneer is also available with rear-wheel drive, unlike its more expensive brother. The Grand Wagoneer also has air suspension as standard, an option with the Wagoneer. The Grand Wagoneer is also higher on the status ladder on a motor level. The Wagoneer comes standard with a 398 hp and 548 Nm 5.7-liter large 48v mild-hybrid V8, an eight-cylinder called eTorque. The Grand Wagoneer gets a 478 hp and 617 Nm strong 6.4 V8 without a mild hybrid system.

As expected, the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer are not coming to the Netherlands.
