The fourth installment in the popular Kingdom Rush series can rightfully call itself one of the best iOS games of 2018. This is why.
Kingdom Rush Vengeance available now
Tower defense games were standard in the App Store rankings a few years ago, but have recently been pushed out by shooters like Fortnite and PUBG. Still, the Kingdom Rush series is bravely holding up, with games dating back years.
This week the series returns with a brand new fourth part, in which it all works slightly differently than we are used to. After being on the right side of the story for three parts, it’s now time to step into the villain’s skin.
This provides an entertaining background story that has little influence on the actual game itself. In Kingdom Rush Vengeance you still place towers along a road that passes wave after wave of enemies.
You have the choice to place an archer, magician, artillery or troops at every spot. You can then upgrade and expand these by earning coins by stopping enemies.
Kingdom Rush as you are used to
By placing the correct towers and using your extra options tactically, you must prevent too many enemies from reaching the end of the road. If that happens too often, then it is game over and start over.
The nice thing about the Kingdom Rush games is the cartoonish graphic style and the fast speed. Each level has a unique design with its own enemies and by continuously introducing new elements, the story flies by.
Because the game supports cloud saves, all your progress is saved, even if you switch to another iPhone or if you have an iPad in addition to an iPhone. Although you pay 5.49 euros for Kingdom Rush Vengeance, there are still a lot of in-app purchases available. For example, you can only unlock some heroes by purchasing them, and for the first time there are also entire towers that are behind a paywall.
Simpler upgrade system and more in-app purchases
And that is a shame, because at the same time the upgrade system has been simplified. This simplification therefore feels mainly as a way to encourage players to spend some extra euros on the game, although it is also a very entertaining game without additional purchase.
Kingdom Rush Vengeance will keep you entertained for hours, and as we’ve come to expect from the previous parts, new levels will undoubtedly be added in the future. We cannot wait.
