‘Lamborghini Huracán gets plug-in hybrid powertrain’

On the market next year

The Lamborghini Huracán has already come on the market in countless variants. All current versions of the supercar share one important aspect: the naturally aspirated 5.2 V10 behind the front seats. In the relatively short term, the Huracán can expect a bigger change in the form of a plug-in hybrid heart. That is what the technical chief of the brand says to the British Auto Express.

Lamborghini does not seem to find it time for a successor to the Huracán. First up is the Aventador. However, the brand has set an important point on the horizon with regard to the electrification of the range. In 2024, every model will have some form of electrification. These can be mild hybrids, but also plug-in hybrids. Rouven Mohr, Chief Technical Officer at Lamborghini, says the Huracán will have a plug-in hybrid powertrain. That variant should be on the market next year.

According to Mohr, the performance of the Huracán is ‘a big step’ with the plug-in hybrid powertrain, but he does not want to disclose specific details yet. He does say that the engine is “tailor-made for Lamborghini” and has “more than six and less than 12 cylinders”. This leaves two options open: a V8 or V10. Parent company Volkswagen Group already has a plug-in hybrid powertrain with V8. This combination can be found in the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid and is good for a system power of 700 hp. However, that powertrain would have to be considerably improved because the Huracán has the engine in a different place and is a lot smaller. Given Mohr’s statement, a V10 with plug-in hybrid support would also be a possibility.

Whatever power source the Huracán with plug gets, the above figure of 700 hp is probably too little. That would not be too much power gain compared to the current top model from the Huracán range: the STO. If we look at arch-rival Ferrari, the 296 GTB may be a good benchmark. A power of between 800 and 850 hp would not be a crazy value for the plug-in hybrid Huracán.

The Huracán with electric power is a nice intermediate step for Lamborghini towards a replacement for the model. However, unlike his big brother, he has not yet been spotted in camouflage clothing. Since the Gallardo lasted eleven years and the Huracán saw the light of day in 2014, it is conceivable that Lamborghini will not come up with a successor to the Huracán until 2025.
