Latest iOS 17.1 beta is out: this is new in the update

Apple has released the latest iOS 17.1 beta. As a result, we now know exactly which features are included in the final update: these are them.

Latest iOS 17.1 beta

iOS 17 was released exactly one month ago, and now the next major update is in sight: iOS 17.1. Apple has already tested the update in recent weeks using the necessary betas, and now the so-called Release Candidate has been released. This is the final test version, which is almost always the same as the version that will soon be available to all users.

As a result, we now know exactly which functions are included in iOS 17.1. We have listed them for you.

1. AirDrop via the Internet

AirDrop now supports sending files over the Internet for the first time. When you’re airdropping a large file to another iPhone and you don’t have the patience for it, you can now just walk away. The file is then no longer sent locally, but via the internet. Useful!

2. Upgrades for Music

The Music app gets a few useful upgrades in iOS 17.1. Firstly, you can now save songs, albums and playlists as favorites, and filter your entire music library so that you only see your favorites. Secondly, creating playlists becomes easier because you now see recommended songs at the bottom of the playlist that match the rest of your list – just like in Spotify.

3. Better Standby

The Standby function of iOS 17, which allows you to use your iPhone as a night clock, gets some new settings in iOS 17.1. These are specific to iPhone models with an always-on screen, i.e. the iPhone 14 Pro (Max) and iPhone 15 Pro (Max). With the new settings you can now choose whether you want to leave the screen permanently on in Standby, or whether it turns off after 20 seconds like with other iPhones.

4. Album on your lock screen

Since iOS 16 (and iPadOS 17), it has been possible to completely customize your lock screen. You can even rotate your photos, so that you always have something new to see. Nice, but there was still no option to choose a specific album for this. This is possible with iOS 17.1.

5. Bug fixes!

The latest improvement to iOS 17.1: the update fixes quite a few bugs! For example, all your own ringtones are shown again (in iOS 17 they were sometimes hidden), the hanging keyboard problem has been resolved, and a bug has been addressed that made it look like your iPhone 15 screen was burned in.

iOS 17.1 release

Now that the release candidate of iOS 17.1 is out, it won’t be long before the update becomes available on all iPhones. The update is expected to be released on Monday, October 23 or Tuesday, October 24.
