With the Geneva Salon right in front of us, many world firsts are getting ready for their great unveiling. Manufacturers take the biggest teaser campaigns out of the closet and, as usual, something leaks out here and there. Hyundai is the new victim, because the biggest news from that brand is already on the internet.
Thanks to the sharp look of Carscoops.com the brand new i20 can be admired razor-sharp from all angles. Just as spyshots and heavy lined sketches already hinted a bit, Hyundai is taking a whole new path with its compact hatchback. In other words: no one line of the outgoing i20 seems to be returning in the new generation. Take the square nose, where a newly drawn grille determines the front. The considerably sharper shaped headlights next to the grille give the i20 a somewhat more aggressive nose.
Seen from the side, the butt runs abruptly and straight. The C-pillar is relatively thin thanks to the far-running third diamond, which of course should benefit the rear view. At the rear of the new i20, we see that the rear lights run through the entire rear in one piece, but then also go around the corner to the rear screen. Funny detail; the fuel cap runs in a smooth line from the rear lights. On the tailgate, with this extra luxury version at least, a lot of work is done with a contrasting black color. The inside of the new i20 remains secret for a while.
Hyundai is one of the last brands in a long list of compact newcomers. We recently met the new Polo, Ibiza, 208, Yaris and Corsa. It is therefore a busy new playing field in which the new i20 will move. With the new sporty design, Hyundai is able to attract more buyers. It would be a welcome change for the brand, because where the first generation achieved great success, the popularity of the car continued to decline. Around 30,000 i20s have been sold in the Netherlands since 2008.
