Lease cars make fewer kilometers

The Association for Car Leasing Companies (VNA) confirms what everyone already suspected: lease cars drive fewer kilometers than before. In many cases, this leads to longer durations, the trade association reports.

All working from home means that cars are stationary more often and that certainly also applies to lease cars. Where, according to the VNA, business lease cars still drove an average of 33,100 kilometers per year in 2019, in 2020 this was only 31,400 kilometers for terminated contracts.

A similar trend is visible for private lease cars, with the average annual mileage falling from 16,900 to 14,900. For vans, VNA reports a less sharp decline from 31,600 in 2019 to 31,000 now. Not surprising, because there is of course no shortage of courier rides with all of today’s internet orders.

VNA not only points to the corona crisis as the cause of this mileage decrease, but also notes that the business bicycle is growing in popularity. The decrease in the number of annual kilometers leads to many lease contracts being renewed. In the aforementioned period, the theoretical term of business contracts increased on average from 42.9 to 44.2 months. For private lease contracts, VNA reports an increase from 49.1 to 49.9 months.

More expensive

At the same time, VNA notes that the cars that are leased are becoming increasingly expensive. This has everything to do with the electrification of the vehicle fleet: EVs and plug-in hybrids are becoming increasingly popular, but are almost without exception more expensive to buy than a traditionally powered alternative. As a result, the theoretical average CO2 emissions of the lease vehicle fleet decreased from 95 to 83 grams per kilometer.
