The number of business registrations of cars to € 20,000 decreased significantly in quarter three compared to quarter two. In the second quarter, the counter was 25,000 registered copies, in the past third quarter there are only 18,000. What has not changed, by the way, is the most chosen car in the B segment. The Volkswagen Polo is also the leader in Q3 in that list with 3,178 registrations.
Big fight for safety
The middle part of the top 10 is close together. So close that they can count the LEDs in the rear lights of their predecessor. Outside the top 3 we find the Peugeot 208 (4th place), Renault Clio (5), Toyota Aygo (6) and the Ford Fiesta (7). Except for the Aygo, these are all B-segment models. They have in common that safety is very important to them and have therefore invested heavily in various ADAS systems on board. For example, terms such as adaptive cruise control, Lane Keeping Assistant, traffic sign recognition and active parking aid are no longer systems of the highest segment.
Technological development
One thing becomes clear when you look at the featured features on the websites of the different models, technology is what the clock strikes. Each model has invested in multimedia displays with a reversing camera. It’s the new standard. The Citroën C1 (9), Peugeot 108 (8) and Toyota Aygo (6) are all equipped with a touchscreen with Android and Apple integration. So you operate a series of apps directly on the screen of these cars. The finalist of this top 10 also has this technology on board. It’s the Volkswagen Up (10). This must have the smallest Volkswagen of its ‘grand space’, according to Volkswagen itself. It does not bring the Up further than tenth place in this top 10.
What about the podium places?
Back to the top 3. It is already known which model takes place 1, the Volkswagen Polo. Behind it we find a newcomer in the top 10 to € 20,000, the Opel Corsa (2). At Opel they apparently thought; “Go big or go home”. They apparently shared that opinion at Autobest when they awarded this Opel Corsa with a “The Best Buy Car of Europe in 2020” this year. The last podium spot is for the Kia Picanto. Kia has earned this place 3 by taking that extra step. More versions, more options and a design that is slightly different from the others in this segment.
