The Formula 1 regulations that came into effect last year, among other things, had to ensure that the F1 cars can race closer together. According to Lewis Hamilton, little has changed and he hopes that changes will come.
It has been worked on for years: the far-reaching regulation changes for 2022. Last Formula 1 season, the current generation of F1 cars made their debut with not only a considerably different appearance than their predecessors, but above all a completely different aerodynamic design with more emphasis on downforce through the floor and less aerodynamic gimmicks higher up the car. This should mean that these new F1 cars can follow each other better and race closer together, because the air behind them is less disturbed. Last year, most drivers and teams praised the changes when it turned out that drivers could indeed race closer together and there were more exciting battles. That seems to be the case again this year, but Lewis Hamilton is not convinced that the intended effect has been achieved.
The seven-time world champion says Motorsport Week even that ‘almost nothing has changed’. “It’s the same as in the past,” said the Briton. “It may have gotten a little bit better, but it didn’t deliver what was expected, so there are still some things that need to be improved for the future.” However, according to Hamilton, it is positive that he no longer bounces through his car. Mercedes did everything last year to have the regulations slightly adjusted to the so-called porpoising to call a halt. Hamilton believes it is paying off: “Last year that bouncing was really bad for us, but this year we are no longer bouncing and that helps to follow other cars more easily.”
