Lightyear aims for more than 100,000 cars per year

Lightyear wants to produce more than 100,000 cars per year of its 2. Tom Selten, ‘VP Business Development’ of the Dutch brand, said this in an interview with Autocar. He also says that the production start of the Lightyear 0 is still scheduled for this calendar year.

It is clear that Lightyear from Brabant has great ambitions. So far, it has not yet led to actually delivered cars. It has been 3.5 years since we first met the Lightyear 0, then under the name Lightyear One. The brand’s first production car is set to go into production in 2021. We later adjusted that to June of this year, and later that became November – this month. To date, the first Lightyear has not yet been delivered, although Selten also now tells Autocar that this will happen this year.

In addition, he gives more information about the ambitions surrounding the Lightyear 2, the brand’s second model. Where the 0 should mainly be a test balloon for its technologies and generate the first turnover, the 2 should bring Lightyear’s efforts to the masses. The model should not only be marketed in Europe (like the Lightyear 0), but also in Asia and the United States. To serve those three markets, Lightyear wants to build more than 100,000 units per year of the two.

The first orders have already arrived.

In any case, talks have already been made for at least 10,000 units of this: both car-sharing platform MyWheels and LeasePlan have already indicated that they each want to include 5,000 units of the Two in their fleets. The 2 must also form an attractive offer for private individuals. Lightyear is aiming for a sales price of around €30,000. By making the car more efficient than we are used to from EVs, it should be able to handle a smaller battery. This could keep the selling price low.

Production of the 2 should start in 2025. Where that will take place is – just like more about the 2 – not yet known. The 946 units of the Lightyear 0 to be built are screwed together in Uusikaupunki, Finland.
