You can now also listen to the radio on your smartphone. Numerous apps make this possible. For this article, we’re looking specifically at RadioDroid 2 for Android, which provides access to many thousands of radio stations worldwide.
RadioDroid 2 can be downloaded from the Play Store. Once the app has started, you can go to the Local immediately make a choice from an impressive list of many hundreds of Dutch radio stations. So you will not only come across the major national channels here, but also a huge number of regional channels, not to mention radio stations that specialize in a certain music genre.
At the top of the screen you can see by the red line under Local that this component is currently active. Scroll right in this header until you reach Labels If you are interested in a specific genre of music, such as chillout, electronic, classical, oldies, or rock. Here too you will find a very long list of genres and, depending on the genre, several tens to many hundreds of radio stations.
You can also listen to stations from other countries, then proceed to the section To land. And if you are interested in a certain language area, choose Languages. It immediately appears that there are still quite a lot of Dutch-language channels outside our country (and Belgium). Didn’t you just automatically see a list of Dutch radio stations at Lokaal? Then choose Countries, Netherlands and they still appear.
Creating order
Due to the gigantic abundance of radio stations, it is sometimes a challenge to find the real gems through the various search methods. Have you found a station that you like because it regularly plays music that you like to hear? Then add it to you right away favorites, so you can jump straight to it at any time.
To do this, tap the arrow to the right of a station name and then tap the star in the list of options that has now appeared. To see all your favorites, tap the white star at the bottom of the app.
Over time, you will probably find that you listen to some stations significantly more than other radio stations. Then it is ideal if the most listened to copies are at the top of the list and the less popular ones at the bottom. This can be easily done by moving channels.
Simply press and hold your finger on a station and then drag it up or down the list. Are there channels that you would rather get rid of in retrospect? Tap the station star again to remove the highlight, or swipe left or right on the radio station.
Record music
As soon as the music is playing, you will see information about the radio station at the bottom of the app and if available about artist and song. Tap or swipe up on this footer to open a screen with even more information.
Here you will find a list of songs you have listened to before. This way you can easily find out what that one song or artist was called again.
Right next to this Track history find the tab Recordings. With RadioDroid you can also record streams. That will be one long recording, so (unfortunately) not split into one file per music track.
You must first tap the play button so that the radio station can be heard. Only then does the record button work. It is therefore not possible to listen to one station and record another station at the same time.
All recordings come together neatly in the recording list. Then you can listen to them with any music app by tapping on them. So that playback does not happen in RadioDroid itself, so you only listen to the original internet streams.
You can optionally copy these recordings to a computer, if you want to listen to the music on it. They are regular mp3 files that are in the folder Music/Recordings of you smartphone so you can easily transfer them via a USB cable.
Export Favorites
Quite a lot of time quickly goes into building and maintaining a list of favorite radio stations. That is why it is wise to save your favorites list every now and then. You can do that from the part Favorites tap the three dots in the top right and then choose Save to playlist. Then copy this m3u file to your computer as well or put it on something like Dropbox or OneDrive.
If he buys a new phone, or if something goes wrong in RadioDroid, you can restore the complete favorites list in one go by loading this file via the option Load from playlist in the same menu. If necessary, choose first Delete Favorites to start with a clean slate, otherwise you will end up with duplicate radio stations.
