Look up emails by date in Gmail

Google is known for its strong search engine. It is therefore no surprise that you can also search extensively for emails with Gmail. For example, if you want to look up e-mails by date, for example for messages you received before or after a certain period, you can. And you can add many more search filters at the same time.

You can search for emails by date in Gmail on both your desktop and mobile devices. You use the Gmail app on your smartphone or tablet, and the Gmail website in your browser on your desktop.

Mails older than a specific period

To find emails older than a specific number of days, months, or years, enter the following in your inbox search bar: older_than:4d, followed by Enter. In this case, 4d for emails you received four days ago. You can of course replace the number with any other number, depending on how many days you want to return.

Replace the d for m, y or even h to search for emails older than a specified number of months, years, or hours.

Mails newer than a specific period

You can also use the aforementioned command in a modified form to search for emails that are newer than a certain period. For example, you run the command newer_than:4d in. You will then find emails that you have received in the past five days. You can also adjust this command to year, hour or month.

Receive emails after specific date

If you want to search a little more specifically for emails from the past, you can use this command, for example: after:2019/10/10 to:me. In this case, all emails you received after October 10, 2019 will be displayed. You can adjust the date yourself and continue after to change into before you can search for emails you received before the date in question.

Below the search bar are some more options to search more specifically for emails.

Through to:me from the command, you include in the search results not only the mails received, but also the messages sent. By a after– and beforecommand you can search for a specific period. This is how you search with after:2020/09/01 before:2020/09/26 (whether or not included) to:me) to emails you have received and sent between September 1 and September 26, 2020.

In these three ways, you can easily search for emails in your Gmail inbox by date. In all cases, after entering the commands, you can specify your search results with the specific buttons you see above your mailbox. For example, you can exclude calendar updates or promotions from your search results, or you can also only search for unread emails.
