Very occasionally one pops up in the streets, but soon you will not see such a Daihatsu Copen in Europe. As far as we’re concerned, that’s a shame, because there is a lovely cart that steals the show in the photos. Alloy wheels, heated seats and a power hardtop are some of the options that make this little Japanese very desirable. With the 1.3-four cylinder, this example is officially not a kei-car, because it is too big for that. Thanks to that engine, the owner is spoiled with 87 hp and performance of a (small) size. This blue smurf shoots to the triple digits within ten seconds and the show of force only stops when the 180 km/h is tapped. You just have to dare in such a small thing, which weighs only 825 kg. With an asking price of just under 10,000 euros, it is certainly not a bargain, but for that amount you drive something very special.

As soon as the first sunny days of the year set in, the little Mazda MX-5s seem to be popping up like mushrooms. They are very popular and do not seem to attract one specific target group. Young and old, man or woman: everyone can make friends with this light-hearted fun package from Mazda. The second-hand offer is huge, but not all of them are fresh and fruity. This red one with a fabric roof still looks neat and comes with a six-month warranty. It is an imported car and the MOT expires in May. Forcing a fresh inspection from the seller is therefore not an unwise choice. Once that is on, it is carefree enjoyment, because the Mazda with its 1,055 kilograms is nice and light-footed and proven reliable and offers a lot of driving pleasure for relatively little money.

British alternative
MG MGF 1.8

You could think of the MGF as the UK’s answer to the Mazda MX-5, as it broadly follows the same philosophy. The MG is light, compact, has rear-wheel drive and offers a lot of driving pleasure for a relatively modest price. This car proves that driving pleasure is also possible without an excess of horsepower. Keep things nice and light on your feet and you’re already well on your way. This original Dutch copy has only just finished the barrel. The British Racing Green looks great on him and the leather upholstery with (fake) wood inlay makes this small MG an elegant appearance, as befits a British car. The price is pleasantly low compared to the two Japanese competitors, so fortunately there is still a budget for maintenance and repairs. The MOT expires next month, so that is a point of negotiation when purchasing.
