Luxembourg tackles traffic jams; free public transport

Since this weekend, it is possible for everyone to use public transport in Luxembourg free of charge. That seems like a noble action from the small country, but it does this out of sheer necessity. The traffic jams are rising!

With the new measure, Luxembourg wants to ensure that everyone takes the car less often. With 670 cars per thousand inhabitants, no other European country has more cars per inhabitant than in that country. Luxembourg is therefore known for its large amount of traffic congestion.

It costs the Luxembourg government € 41 million annually to offer public transport free of charge. In addition, up to 2027 approximately € 4 billion will be invested in improvements to bus and train connections. The government hopes that after all measures 20 percent more people will use public transport. However, according to Nu.nl, critics are skeptical. They point to one of the best known things from Luxembourg: the cheap fuel prices. According to them, motorists will continue to use their cars as long as the amounts remain so low.
