‘The MacBook Air 2022 comes with WWDC’
A new MacBook Air is just around the corner. At least, if we are to believe Apple analyst Mark Gurman of Bloomberg. We previously wrote about the fact that Apple could possibly announce this renewed budget laptop during WWDC 2022.
We have listed a number of expectations, based on rumors from recent months, surrounding the MacBook Air 2022. Read on to find out what new features and hardware we can get to see in this laptop.
MacBook Air 2022 expectations: the M2 chip
Gurman says the new MacBook Air 2022 will come with a new M2 chip as expected. This is only slightly faster than the current M1 chip, but it is another step forward. The current MacBook Air from 2020 has a graphics chip (GPU) with ‘only’ 7 or 8 cores. According to Gurman, the new M2 will have an 8-core CPU and a 9-core or 10-core GPU.
Unfortunately, the M2 chip is not rumored to have the power and speeds of the M1 Pro, M1 Max and M1 Ultra. We find this in the MacBook Pro 2021 and the Mac Studio respectively and is therefore intended for more professional use. That’s fine, considering the MacBook Air 2022 should remain a budget laptop.
Apple first used Intel chips for its products, but since 2020 the company has taken matters into its own hands. Previously, Apple was dependent on Intel and could not release new versions of the MacBook as often as it might have wanted. But now that Apple has the production and designs of the processors in its own hands, that is the case. We think it’s time for that!
Expectations for the design and the camera
Although the expectations were first that the MacBook Air 2022 would get a mini-LED display, lately we have heard more and more noises that it will be an LCD screen after all. When the company introduced a brand new MacBook Pro last November, it became clear that the Air would be the next to get a makeover. Fortunately, our expectations for the white border and colorful versions have not yet been shattered. A redesign of this laptop is therefore still in the pipeline.
The rumors also talk about an improved webcam. That camera should have a 1080p resolution. And it’s about time! The 2020 MacBook Air still has to make do with a 720p webcam.
Connections MacBook Air 2022
According to expectations, the number of connections of the MacBook Air 2022 will be a bit disappointing. The MacBook Pro 2021 still received all kinds of connections (such as HDMI and SD card reader) that we saw in previous laptops from Apple. The MacBook Air 2022 will probably only get two Thunderbolt 4 ports. That means you’ll probably need to buy another adapter to take full advantage of this laptop.
We do expect a MagSafe connector. Apple just brought these back to the MacBook Pro. This means that if you trip over your cables, your entire laptop will not immediately fall off your table, but that only the cable will fall out due to this magnetic connection. We don’t know much about the battery yet, but we expect it to be about as good as that of the 2020 version.
