Man caught with 1,600 liters of diesel from abroad in the back

Diesel at gas station

A 59-year-old man from Germany, who apparently hoped to be cheaper by filling up 1,600 liters of diesel in neighboring Poland, has yet been presented with the bill. Authorities in Zittau, Germany, noticed that the man was driving around with large barrels full of fuel in his truck.

Germans are of course allowed to refuel in the neighboring EU country, but not indefinitely. According to German media, they are allowed to fill their tank and also import another 20 liters in spare containers. The man in his fifties went a little further. He had eight containers filled with 200 liters of diesel each. Police caught the man returning to Germany after his refueling session. Agents also called in customs. The man was then presented with a hefty bill. He owes the tax authorities €750. In addition, the police fined him €1,500 for the risky way in which he transported dangerous goods.

Just like our country, Germany is struggling with record high fuel prices. Of course they are cheap in Germany compared to us, but motorists there again look to Poland to refuel cheaper. Incidentally, Dutch ‘fuel tourism’ sometimes ran out of steam in Belgium and Germany at the end of last year. There, gas station owners warned that they sometimes saw Dutch people driving home with ‘moving bombs’.
