In iOS 17, Maps is getting a number of features, including one of the most requested features for the app. This is changing!
Maps in iOS 17
iOS 17 will be coming to your iPhone next month, which will add useful functions to your phone. In iOS 17, a number of Apple’s apps look slightly different, for example, the Phone and Messages app change in the new iOS version. Maps is also being expanded in iOS 17, making the app a lot better. We list the new features for you!
1. Download Offline Maps in iOS 17
The biggest Maps change in iOS 17 is the download of offline maps. Google Maps already had this feature, but Apple’s Maps lacked it. That will change with iOS 17, because you can finally use the app without internet. With the function you download a part of the map, so you no longer need mobile data to load the route.

Downloading maps in iOS 17 is especially useful if you’re going to an area abroad where you have poor (or no) mobile coverage. Previously, the map would no longer load after a while, but with iOS 17 the map is simply on your iPhone. Extremely handy and it saves data, because loading Maps secretly demands quite a lot from your mobile subscription.

2. Directions have been moved
When you have entered a destination in Maps and the route starts, the directions in iOS 16 appear at the bottom of the screen. This has been moved with iOS 17, because the directions for your route are then just above the map. If you tap on it, you will get an overview of the directions. So you no longer have to open the menu with the route options in iOS 17.
3. Added EV charging stations to Maps
Do you have an electric car? Then we have good news, because from iOS 17, charging stations for electric cars can be found in Maps. You can find this under ‘Gas stations’ in the app. You can then determine for yourself which petrol stations you see the charging stations and within what distance they are located. This way you immediately know which petrol stations have a charging station and how long you still have to drive!

4. Adjust voice volume in Maps
From iOS 17 it is also possible to adjust the voice volume with which the directions are spoken in Maps. ‘Voice volume’ has been added to the route options, you then have the choice of softer, normal and louder. So you can finally select the desired volume, so that you have the right balance between your music and the route description during your journey.

Maps has therefore received a much-requested feature in iOS 17 with offline maps. This was one of the few features that Google Maps had, but not Apple Maps yet. With offline maps, Google Maps is almost superfluous, although it is still waiting for the cycling routes in Maps to become available in the Netherlands.
