If there’s one car that makes you smile for two different reasons, it’s the second-generation Mazda 121. In the first place because you hardly see it anymore, but above all because it is a wonderfully special thing.
We fully understand that AutoWeek forum member HarmenA took a moment to take pictures when seeing this Mazda 121. Thanks for sharing the photos in the ‘what did you see today’ topic! This 121 was once a good sales success for Mazda, but unfortunately there are few copies left. We say ‘unfortunately’, because the ‘Bolhoed’ christened 121 can count on quite a bit of approval here at the editors. But hey, tastes differ of course.
Anyway, it was a striking thing. In contrast to the first generation of the 121, this one had a nice extravagant shape. Mazda chose to make it into a tiny sedan with a high roof, so that you were pretty good in it for its size. The somewhat disproportionate high roof gave this generation 121 its nickname. A nickname meant more affectionately than jokingly. Let’s be honest, how can you really have anything against such a cuddly model?
However, this is a 121 with a less striking paint color than you often saw in the past. He also leaves some bonus points because it did not have the electrically retractable fabric roof, which made the 121 completely top. What does speak in its favor is that it is a 121 GLX. That had the 1.3 with a capacity of 73 hp in the nose and not the amechtige 54 hp version that was also available. With that stronger 1.3, the 121 was quickly fed up. In any case, convincing enough for the owner of this gray 121 to remain loyal to it for 3.5 years. We can only encourage him or her to keep chugging along happily!
