The nearly nine-year-old Mazda 2 is getting another facelift. We are not talking about the Toyota Yaris-with-Mazda badges, but about the real Mazda 2 that has been running in the Netherlands for a while.
The Mazda 2 European delivery range is twofold. Since 2015, Mazda has been selling the current third-generation Mazda 2 presented a year earlier in Europe, but a completely new model was added in 2022. Mazda also sells the Mazda 2 Hybrid, which is irreverently a hybrid Toyota Yaris on which Mazda has printed its own logos. In Japan, the fully Mazda-developed 2 gets a facelift.

Mazda has a habit of updating its models through model year updates over the years. Some years they are more drastic than others. For example, in 2019 there was a real facelift. Also now Mazda puts the 2 back on the cutting table. It gets new bumpers on both the front and rear. That is not the most striking, as you have undoubtedly already seen in the photos. The previously chrome-colored grille surround is now black and the plastic of the front bumper now extends into the grille. At least, if you choose that option. Sport trims are available in Japan and feature a mesh-filled grille.
More news relates to the wheels and roof. There are other hubcaps in which the exterior color returns and those who want can get foil with a different color than the rest of the body stuck on the roof. The side mirror caps are also available in different colours. There is more to personal taste than ever before. According to Mazda, more than 198 color combinations are now possible. The paint colors Airstream Blue Metallic and Aero Gray Metallic are new. Mazda also supplies new trim parts for the interior.
Will this facelift stay in Japan? We think not. The Dutch importer says he cannot yet confirm or deny that we will receive the same revisions here. Since the Mazda 2 in Europe has so far been neatly in line with the Japanese model in terms of updates and the fact that this generation is still allowed in the Netherlands for a while, we assume that we will see the innovations mentioned in our Mazda showrooms.
