Mazda 2 Saloon

The Mazda 2 is a special model family. In Europe, the Mazda 2 is both ‘a Mazda 2’ and a Toyota Yaris, while the Toyota Yaris was previously a Mazda 2 in the United States. In addition, the Mazda 2 is also available as a sedan. That sedan has now been facelifted just like the hatchback.

AutoWeek looks further than its Dutch car nose is long and so we like to look across the border to fish the tastiest or most interesting currants from the automotive porridge. Today we are digitally descending to Thailand where Mazda has presented the renewed 2 sedan. The Mazda 2 sedan has undergone the same refresh as the Mazda 2 Hatchback recently. That means: a fresh touch and new and above all stubborn ways to personalize the model.

Mazda 2 Hybrid

The Toyota Yaris Hybrid is sold in the Netherlands as a Mazda 2 Hybrid.

The current-generation Mazda 2 sedan debuted in late 2014, so it’s been around for quite some time, but not as long as the hatchback. It was introduced a few months earlier. The Mazda 2 sedan is about 26 centimeters longer than the hatchback and that gives it a considerably larger luggage space. Where the hatchback swallows 255 liters, you can enjoy no less than 440 liters of storage fun in the sedan. The Mazda 2 sedan has never been sold in the Netherlands and that will not change. The arrival of this revised sedan does give us a wafer-thin excuse to view the other variants that have never appeared in the Netherlands.

The Scion iA: a Mazda 2 sedan in the United States. This later became the Toyota Yaris sedan.

The Mazda 2 is a special one within the European Mazda family. It is both a Mazda and a Toyota. The Mazda 2 is available in the Netherlands as a ‘real Mazda’ with a 90 hp mild hybrid 1.5 with manual gearbox and as a 90 hp 1.5 with automatic transmission without mild hybrid technology. In addition, you can purchase the Mazda 2 Hybrid in the Netherlands, in fact nothing more than a Toyota Yaris Hybrid with Mazda badges. Europe is not the only market where the two brands exchanged badges.

Toyota Yaris USA

The Mazda 2 Hatchback also became a Toyota Yaris in the US.

The Mazda 2 hatchback – which was still called Demio in Japan until 2019 – did not come to the United States in Mazda form. Instead, Toyota’s now-defunct “youth brand” Scion sold the Mazda 2 sedan as Scion iA. After Scion disappeared, the Scion iA was transferred to Toyota and sold as Toyota Yaris iA and then simply known as Yaris Ssdan. Later, the Mazda 2 hatchback was also sold as Toyota in the United States. It was simply called Toyota Yaris Hatchback. The Mazda 2 sedan was also sold as Toyota Yaris Sedan in Canada and was until recently sold in Mexico as Toyota Yaris R on the sales lists.
