A modern Mazda in Facelift Friday, we don’t see that very often. Mazda likes subtle model year updates more than rigorous facelifts, but with the CX-5 we can now speak of that.

Of course, the first CX-5 also had to believe it. The car got a slatted grille in 2014 and we called that a facelift at the time, but for ‘Facelift Friday’ we prefer to focus on cars that are treated more extensively.

That is certainly the case with the latest CX-5, now of course the second generation. The model launched in 2017 is now in the showroom with a modified front and rear.

The fact that the changes go further than just the layout of the light units is apparent from the ‘sliding plate’ below. Although the headlights retain their basic shape and position, they are clearly different, especially at the bottom and around the connection to the grille. The grille frame extends significantly less into the headlight and is thicker, while the grille at the bottom is significantly widened and therefore looks less pointed.

The front bumper has always been nice and tidy and modest, especially by today’s standards. Mazda resisted the temptation to install huge fake grilles from the start, but still manages to make things a bit tighter than before. This is mainly because the fog lamps have disappeared, as well as their horizontal housing. This leaves only a modest air inlet.

From the side it is noticeable that the wheel arch edges on the press photos have been sprayed in body color. However, this is only the case with the most expensive Signature version, the rest still get ‘just’ black accents. The taillights are completely new and extend much further into the tailgate. This makes the car a bit wider, which the new rear bumper also contributes to.
