Mazda MX-30 R-EV

The Mazda MX-30 has always been fully electrically powered in the Netherlands, but is now getting a new version. This is the Mazda MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV. It is always electrically powered, but also has a rotary engine!

Mazda brings back a special piece of technical history in a modern form. It hangs a rotary engine in the MX-30. This is the Mazda MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV, in fact a plug-in hybrid that is always fully electrically powered, but which therefore has a combustion engine on board.

The Mazda MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV has a relatively small battery on board. It has a capacity of 17.8 kWh, which is less than the regular MX-30, which has 35.5 kWh of electrical lung capacity. The battery pack is good for an electric range of 85 kilometers. In addition, the MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV has a rotary engine that functions as a generator. So a range extender. This special machine gets its fuel from a 50 liter tank. And helps the MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV to a total range of more than 600 kilometers. The rotary engine itself has a capacity of 830 cc and delivers 74 hp at 4,700 rpm, but those forces do not go to the wheels. That the engine has such a small capacity is quite normal for a rotary engine. For comparison: the last rotary engine that Mazda delivered in the RX-8 was only 654 cc in size.

With 170 hp and 260 Nm, the electric motor in the MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV is stronger than that of the regular MX-30 (145 hp). It reaches a speed of 100 km/h in 9.1 seconds, making it slightly faster than the regular electric version (9.7 seconds). Its top speed is limited to 140 km/h. DC charging is possible with up to 36 kW (3-phase). The new engine version of the MX-30 also has V2L technology, so you can also charge electrical devices with it. With an empty weight of 1,778 kilos, the MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV is heavier than the electric variant, which weighs at least 1,620 kilos.
