Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Hybrid

The Mercedes-Benz GLE is available in two guises and each body variant of the SUV is also available with a wide range of powertrains, including two AMG engine versions. There is now one added and it also has a plug. This is the Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Hybrid.

Anyone who goes shopping for a GLE in the Netherlands can get that SUV not only as a traditional SUV, but also as a Coupé. The engine range of both GLEs is quite extensive. Mild-hybrid petrol and diesel engines are available, plug-ins with a petrol and diesel engine and fantastic mild-hybrid AMG flavors. The AMG range consists of the 435 hp (+20 hp) strong GLE 53 and the 612 hp (+20 hp) strong GLE 63 S. In the United States there is now also an AMG version with a plug. It is called the Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Hybrid and in terms of power it is positioned between the well-known AMG 53 and the top version AMG 63.

Just like the mild-hybrid GLE 53, the new GLE 53 Hybrid has a 3.0 inline-six. The petrol engine produces 449 hp and 560 Nm in the 53 Hybrid. The six-cylinder is supported by a 136 hp and 480 Nm strong electric motor. That combination is good for a system power of 543 hp and 750 Nm. The GLE’s 53 Hybrid accelerates to a speed of 97 km/h (60 mph) in 4.6 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h. This means they reach 100 km/h sooner than the non-plug-in hybrid GLE’s 53 (5.0 s). The electric motor draws its energy from a 31.2 kWh battery pack that is also found in the existing plug-in hybrid variants of the SUVs. Mercedes-Benz has not yet released the electric range. The GLE 400e and 350de squeeze at least 89 to 105 electric kilometers from that package.

We are still awaiting a response from the Dutch importer to the question of whether the GLE’s 53 Hybrid will also come to the Netherlands and – if so – whether they will replace the existing mild-hybrid 53 AMGs.
