Mercedes AMG GT2

Going onto Circuit Zandvoort with a heavily stripped Citroën Saxo can be fantastic, but for some that is not nearly spectacular enough. Mercedes-AMG has a possible answer: this is the Mercedes-AMG GT2.

The Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series may be the most powerful AMG GT, but according to its creators, this Mercedes-AMG GT2 is the ‘most powerful homologated racing car’. With this – unlike the Black Series – non-street-legal racing gun, wealthy customers can measure themselves on the track with other racing cars from the GT2 class.

The Mercedes-AMG GT2 is broadly similar to the Black Series, partly due to its large (and completely newly developed) rear wing, but otherwise has a slightly more subtle appearance. That is of course very relative, because it remains a pretty extreme trim of the AMG GT. This is also the case under the hood, because there is a whopping 707 hp and 800 Nm strong version of the biturbo 4.0 V8, equipped with a flat crankshaft. Switching is done with a six-speed sequential gearbox.

Although the Mercedes-AMG GT2 therefore focuses a good 30 hp on the Black Series, the GT2 with a weight of ‘less than 1,400 kilos’ is well over 200 kilos lighter. That is in addition to the frequent use of aluminum, including in the pretty bare interior, although you can get air conditioning. Furthermore, everything is of course completely focused on racing, with a special bucket seat and an F1-like multifunction racing wheel. You are also accompanied by a steel roll cage with safety nets, which should ensure that you get out of the car alive if you have overestimated your driving skills. Traction control, ‘racing ABS’, six-piston front and four-piston rear calipers, extensively adjustable racing shock absorbers and adjustable stabilizer bars are there to make your laps quickly and safely.

It is certain that you have to be wealthy to get started with the Mercedes-AMG GT2 in the new GT2 season. How rich exactly, that is not yet clear. Mercedes-AMG will release the GT2 in the course of next year and that will undoubtedly be known.
