Extra side windows
Six months after the current Mercedes-Benz E-class made its debut, we are officially introduced to the extended version. For the time being, Mercedes-Benz has only presented the E-class L to Chinese consumers, which means that Chinese E customers will soon be able to lie almost completely stretched out in the back.
The brand new Mercedes-Benz E-class was presented in April this year as a Limousine and was joined a few months later by the E-class Estate. Recently, Mercedes-Benz added the adventurously decorated All-Terrain to the E family and today we are introduced to yet another new bodywork variant. It is called E-class L and as the added letter already reveals, it is a lot longer than the regular E-class Limousine.
The four-door E-class that you can order in the Netherlands is certainly not a small car with its car length of 4.95 meters and wheelbase of 2.96 meters. The E-class L is of course a size larger. Mercedes-Benz has increased the wheelbase by 13 centimeters to 3.09 meters and the car length has increased by 14 centimeters to 5.09 meters. This means that the new Mercedes-Benz E-class is almost as long as the ‘short’ version of the previous S-class (length: 5.12 meters, wheelbase: 3.04 meters). Of course, the E-class L has longer rear doors, but there is more. The car gets new side windows between the rear doors and the roof pillar. According to the figures, the E-class is 2.5 centimeters higher and that seems to mean that the roof has actually been raised.
The Mercedes-Benz E-class L is built in China by the Beijing-Benz joint venture. We do not expect the extended E-class – just like the previous one – in the Netherlands. With the E-class L, Mercedes-Benz in China is of course targeting the extended 5-series and the stretched Audi A6.
