Geez.
Have you been charmed by the G-class for years, but is that chunky off-roader too big or too expensive for you? Then we have good news! Mercedes-Benz confirms the arrival of a small G-class. It may not be called G-class – with a capital – but ‘g-Class’.
During the Munich IAA, the Concept CLA was of course the absolute star of the show. The new Mercedes-Benz E-class All-Terrain also made its public debut there. But it doesn’t stop there. We can’t show you the third newcomer yet, but we can tell you about it. Mercedes CEO Ola Källenius announced the arrival of a small G-class last night during the Mercedes-Benz Pre-Night.
“There will be a smaller version of one of our most iconic models. Yes, there will be a small G,” Källenius said at the end of the presentation of the Concept CLA. “We understand that with a small G we have big shoes to fill,” said the CEO. The small G-class becomes electric, immediately recognizable as ‘G’, fun to drive and must be able to hold its own both on and off the asphalt.
We aim for the small G-class to be placed on the MMA platform, just like the final production version of the Concept CLA and other compact newcomers from Mercedes-Benz. During the development of that platform, electric drivetrains were largely taken into account, but the basis is also suitable for combustion engines. The small G-class will in any case have an electric drivetrain, but it cannot be ruled out that versions with combustion engines will also be available. By the way, an electric version of the real G-class is also on the way. It will be called EQG. Will the small electric G be called EQg? No. Mercedes-Benz will eventually stop using the EQ label.
