Merging PDF files on a Mac with Preview: this is how you do it

Do you want to merge a single PDF with other PDF files on your Mac? Then you don’t have to install any special programs for that. In this tip, we’ll show you how the Preview app does everything you need to.

Merge a PDF file with Preview

How to bundle a collection of separate PDFs is a question that is frequently asked online. It is therefore not surprising that numerous websites and programs have been made to do this job. However, these services often cost money to use or require you to install an additional program on your Mac. Adobe requires you to purchase a special PDF app, so that option is not available to many.

Fortunately, the Preview app that comes with every iMac and MacBook has this feature built in. By following the steps below, you can bundle dozens of separate PDFs into a single file in one operation.

This is how you can merge a PDF

  1. Open one of the PDF files you want to merge in Preview;
  2. Click on ‘View’ in the menu bar at the top of the screen;
  3. Choose ‘Thumbnails’;
  4. Now drag the PDF files you want to add to the document in the left column of the Preview window;
  5. When you are done, click on ‘Archive’;
  6. Choose ‘Export as PDF’ to export the bundled PDF file.

As you go through the steps above, you can change the order of the PDFs at any time by dragging them in the left column. Do this before exporting the document, because then all pages will be pinned to a new file. When exporting, always choose the highest possible quality depending on what you use it for. This prevents your PDF bundle from consisting of pages with poorly compressed images.
