With cars like the ZS EV and EHS, MG barely reminds of the English brand of yesteryear, but that may change. With this Cyberster concept, the brand goes back to its rich past.
When you think of MG, you will undoubtedly quickly or even immediately think of the immensely popular open two-seater that the brand spawned in the last century. The MG A and MG B in particular are true icons of the British car industry. After the F and then TF, however, it ended with two-seat roadsters and the now reborn MG under Chinese leadership did not venture on such a model for the time being. This may change, because in Shanghai the brand is showing this Cyberster. A concept car that at least partly goes back to the aforementioned MGs.
The concept car announced last year can now be viewed in more detail for the first time and it is clear that the car harks back to the past in its design. Except for the round headlights, real design hints to old MG roadsters cannot be found. A special detail is that the rear lights are clearly inspired by the Union Jack, which undoubtedly causes frowns on the desks of Mini. MG describes it as ‘reference to English heritage’. By the way, if you doubt whether there is enough light from the headlights: they fold open in two parts according to MG when you turn them on.
MG will leave no concrete details about the drive, because there must still be enough to report at the Shanghai Auto Show at the end of this month. The brand does want to say that the Cyberster is fully electrically powered and that it has a range of 800 km, undoubtedly according to the NEDC cycle. The roadster is also powerful enough to shoot from a standstill to 100 km / h in less than three seconds. We hope that it will not stop with this study model, but that it all leads to an MG that also comes this way. So we will know more at the end of this month, but you can count on it that a possible production version will take at least until next year.
