Mitsubishi calls Renault clone ‘intermediate solution’

Mitsubishi seemed to withdraw from Europe, but remains active here. The new ASX is the first new European model of the brand in ages, only we already know that car as Renault Captur. Mitsubishi explains.

More than two years ago, it seemed that Mitsubishi in Europe would quietly close its doors after phasing out the existing range. In March 2021, however, the news came out that two more new Mitsubishis would still be coming this way. The first of those two has now been revealed; the ASX. Unfortunately for the Mitsubishi fans, this makes it clear that the survival of the brand in Europe is not yet implemented in a creative way. After all, the ASX is not much more than a Renault Captur with different logos. The second newcomer is the Colt and that is expected to be a Renault Clio with Mitsubishi logos.

Although it may not be an inspiring way of working, it is thanks to this ‘Mitsubishi Captur’ that the brand has a future here at all. Mitsubishi Europe boss Frank Krol says: “Fortunately, they came back from that (the decision to leave Europe, ed.) and an interim solution could be found within the alliance with Renault and Nissan. In the Renault factory in Vallalodid in Spain they turned out to be production capacity and in this way we have been able to create a successor to the ASX,” he said AD.nl on.

The Dutch CEO hopes that the ASX, despite the fact that it is not really a Mitsubishi, can still keep loyal customers warm for Mitsubishi until it really has its own model again. “With this new model, we can at least keep hundreds of thousands of ASX drivers in Europe within the brand by offering them a better offer than if they were to switch to another brand. But I don’t know what step two will be yet. we’re going to think about it now.” From the latter we conclude that the future of the Japanese brand in our continent, despite the new ASX and Colt, remains somewhat uncertain for the time being.
