It’s actually not allowed, but if you have a Netflix it is very easy to share your account and password with your family and friends. Until now, that wasn’t really a big problem, but Netflix will soon start charging extra money for it.
Share Netflix account password
Netflix’s terms and conditions state that you may not share the account (and associated password) with anyone outside your household. Many Netflix users don’t care about this and give their relatives and friends access to their data. The free sharing of your account is now really going to put an end to Netflix.
Pay for extra access
A new way to restrict the sharing of your Netflix account and password is to pay for additional access. Netflix is currently testing paying for additional access in three countries.
Want to share your Netflix account with one of your friends? You can, but it will cost you extra money. In the countries where the function is now being tested, the price is $2.99 per person. This will probably be 2.99 euros per individual in the Netherlands and Belgium.
Notification when sharing your Netflix account
Of course it has been coming for a while, because Netflix has been working for a while to prevent the sharing of your Netflix account and password with ‘other families’ or your friends. They did this by regularly notifying you when someone else uses your account.
By verifying your account information and sending the code, that person was able to look a few weeks further. The annoying thing about this message is that you sometimes got it yourself when, for example, you use Netflix on vacation or in your student house.
And if you’re not going to pay extra for Netflix?
It is not yet known whether Netflix will do more to prevent the sharing of the account and password. They will probably send the ‘nag’ notification (even) more often if multiple families use your account or they find a way to stop sharing altogether.
