Do you watch Netflix regularly? Then we have bad news, because if you have an older iPhone, Netflix will soon stop working. Here’s how to prevent that!
Netflix ends support
Netflix has announced that older iPhones will soon no longer support the streaming service’s app. Is your iPhone still running iOS 16? Then the Netflix app on your iPhone will no longer receive new updates. For now that is not a problem, but after a while you will no longer be able to use the app at all. Users will then receive a message that they must update to iOS 17.
Of course, this is easily solved by installing iOS 17 (or soon iOS 18) on your iPhone. You can find the update in the settings of your smartphone under ‘General > Software Update’. Download iOS 17 there, so that the update is installed on your iPhone immediately or during the night. The Netflix app will then work properly on your iPhone again. However, this is not the solution for everyone, because a number of iPhones cannot update to the latest iOS version.
These iPhones (and iPads) Can’t Update
Every year, iPhones are eliminated when Apple releases a major iOS update, and that will also be the case with the release of iOS 17 in 2023. iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X (and older) no longer support the latest version of iOS. Do you still have one of these iPhones? That means that Netflix will soon no longer work on your iPhone. If you have an iPhone XR or later, you can continue to use the app without a problem.
Netflix didn’t just announce this for the iPhone; a number of iPads will also soon no longer work with the app. Models that still run on iPadOS 16 will lose support for the streaming service’s app. This means that you can no longer watch Netflix on the fifth-generation iPad and the first-generation iPad Pro. If you have an iPad that runs iPadOS 17 (and soon iPadOS 18), you don’t have to do anything.
Watch Netflix on your iPhone anyway
It is important to update your iPhone to iOS 17 and your iPad to iPadOS 17 so that Netflix remains available on your device. It is not yet clear why Netflix has made this choice. It is also not yet known when Netflix will no longer work on older iPhones and iPads, but it is expected that it will not be long. Support may end with the next update of the app.
Will Netflix soon no longer work on your iPhone because you cannot update to iOS 17? Then you can still watch the streaming service in your browser. You can still open Netflix via Safari, Chrome or another browser. In that case, it is advisable to add a Netflix web application to your home screen, so that you do not have to search for the website every time. Read here how to do that.
