Hyundai’s luxury division Genesis is in the middle of a major rejuvenation cure. In a short time the brand launched one new or revised model one after another and there is much more in the pipeline. Including a new G90, which has now been caught in a wrapped camouflage suit during test work.
Hyundai cut the Genesis model name from the Hyundai range in 2015 and turned it into a luxury brand just like Lexus is Toyota’s premium brand. The first-born was the G90, the successor to Hyundai’s top sedan that previously went through life as Equus. The G90 was thoroughly facelifted in 2018 and was introduced to a more pronounced design language of the brand. The Genesis delivery range now consists of a whole series of fresh models. The offering starts with the G70 and has the specially lined 5-series competitor G80 above it. Genesis also has a nice offer with the GV80 and the still very young GV70 when it comes to SUVs. A whole host of models are still in the works, including an electric crossover and a shooting brake-like station version of the G70. Fortunately, Genesis does not forget the now almost six-year-old G90. In these spy photos, the new G90 can be seen in a winter test costume.
Genesis G90 (current model)
The forthcoming G90 is still in the spotlight, but it is abundantly clear that Genesis’ opponent of the Lexus LS and BMW 7-series is also completely in line with the current models in terms of design. Although the current model already had headlights that were optically divided into two parts by a horizontal line, the new type actually gets two-layer headlights like the G80. The shield-shaped grille is placed lower on the nose. Although the windows of the G90 are clearly higher than those of the more liftback-like G80, the whole looks less static than with the current model thanks to the rising shoulder line. A striking detail are the tiny side windows that Genesis places behind the rear doors. The back is still so fanatically covered with camouflage material that unfortunately we cannot tell much from it. It is obvious that the rear lights are also divided over two floors.
Genesis G90 (current model)
The new Genesis G90 is the first to be marketed in its home country South Korea, but will also be on the market in the United States around the end of this year or early next year. There will undoubtedly be six-cylinder versions again, although the question is whether the 5.0 V8 of the current model will return in an adapted form. Given Hyundai’s great focus on electrification, it could just be that Genesis comes with a hybrid version. In fact, there is reportedly even a fully electric G90e in the barrel. Whether you can also buy the G90 in the Netherlands? Not yet, but Genesis actually has plans to make the transition to the European market. It is still unknown when Genesis will visit the European mainland.
