New MacBook Pros are coming with one great new feature

Even though there will be no more Apple event this year, according to a new rumor, Apple will still announce new products, including new MacBook Pros!

New MacBook Pros on the way

Although we do not think that MacBooks with the M3 chip will be released this year, according to a new rumor, MacBooks with a new screen will probably be released. These would be 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros with mini-LED displays.

The rumor comes from a message from DigiTimes, which states: “We expect Apple to ship new models of 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro devices in the fourth quarter of 2023 with mini-LED backlights that can increase screen brightness by 10 percent increase compared to the first generation”.

That doesn’t seem very special. It is not about higher brightness, but about lower energy consumption. “The upcoming MacBook Pros will have mini LEDs that are 10% brighter than the previous ones with the same number. This brightness improvement is not intended to improve image quality, but to save power and improve battery life.”

Mini LED instead of OLED

MacRumors received earlier this week information indicating that Apple will begin accepting some relatively new Mac models for trade-ins this month. That’s an indication that Apple has plans to release a new Mac model soon. So this seems to support the DigiTimes rumor.

The report from DigiTimes further suggests that the iPad Pro series will switch from mini-LED to hybrid OLED in 2024, and that MacBook Pros will continue to use mini-LED until 2026. The reason for this could be the burn-in problem that usually comes with OLED screens. This is a bigger problem for laptops because they are usually on for longer.

Reliability of DigiTimes

DigiTimes’ claims are certainly not excluded, but there are also reasons to doubt the message. Apple equipped the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro with M2 Pro and M2 Max chips in January, and most other rumors indicate that updated models will not be available until next year.

DigiTimes obtains its information from suppliers that make parts for iPhones and other Apple products. These sources often provide reliable information, but the site has a less good reputation when it comes to interpreting that information, especially when it comes to release dates. It’s often best to remain a little skeptical of information from the site, especially when it comes to rumors.
