The Mazda 2 will be joined next year by the Mazda 2 Hybrid. Although the addition ‘Hybrid’ doesn’t seem that exciting, it is a completely different car than the Mazda 2 we know. Mazda puts its logos flatly on the Toyota Yaris.
At the end of 2014, Mazda introduced the current 2, which is already getting quite old. That is why Mazda will put forward a new 2 next year, but not yet the new 2. We are talking about the Mazda 2 Hybrid, which will be placed next to the regular 2 in the showroom. The Mazda 2 Hybrid is basically a Toyota Yaris Hybrid with some minimal exterior changes.
The Mazda 2 Hybrid also has the well-known powertrain: a 1.5 three-cylinder that mobilizes 116 hp system power with the help of an electric motor. That means you can count on 0-100 km/h acceleration in 9.7 seconds and a top speed of 175 km/h. Mazda reports an expected gas mileage of 3.8-4.0 l/100 km, depending on whether you choose 16- or 15-inch wheels respectively.

You may well investigate if you want to be able to distinguish the Mazda 2 Hybrid from the Toyota Yaris Hybrid on the public road in due course. Of course the Mazda logos give it away and also the model name on the back of the car, otherwise the two are almost identical. If there is a distinctive element anyway, it can be found on the tailgate. With the Yaris, the rear lights are visually connected by a red stripe, with the Mazda 2 Hybrid that is not the case. There it is black that strikes the clock. It is also a well-known story in the interior.
Mazda 2 Hybrid
Obviously, the addition of the Mazda 2 Hybrid to the range should help reduce the overall CO2 emissions of Mazda’s model range. Mazda may have the fully electric MX-30, but for the rest it mainly supplies cars with non-electrified or only mild-hybrid powertrains. The Mazda 2 is the first full hybrid.
The new Mazda 2 Hybrid will be produced side by side with the Toyota Yaris and, as mentioned, will come to the showroom next year. In the spring to be exact. Prices will be announced in the run-up to launch. Fun fact: the Mazda 2 previously formed the basis for the Toyota Yaris. Then we are talking about the Toyota Yaris that can be found on the North American market. That is a modified version of the current Mazda 2 with Toyota logos on it. Incidentally, the first generation Yaris was also available as Daihatsu Charade.
