Toyota confirms the name of the successor to the Aygo. It will surprise few people. The new Toyota Aygo will be called Aygo again, but will get an X behind its name. You do not have to wait long for the Toyota Aygo X.

Aygo X. That is the name of the soon completely new Aygo that Toyota will introduce to the world in November. From that moment on, the third generation of Toyota’s smallest model is no longer a brother of the Citroën C1 and Peugeot 108. But there are more areas where Toyota’s new city car breaks with the outgoing model.

With the Aygo X Prologue, Toyota already gave a preview of the successor to the Aygo in March this year. That study model was immediately recognizable as Aygo, although the car was laced with more crossover-like design elements. The study model stood higher on its legs than you are used to from an Aygo and had, among other things, attached wheel arches that were filled with larger wheels.

The name ‘Aygo X’ does not come completely out of the blue. For example, the current Toyota Aygo is available in various versions with an X in the name, such as the X-Joy, X-JLB and X-clusiv and even the infotainment system is called X-Touch. In addition, the second generation of Aygo front with an X in it which was added extra during the facelift of 2018. Furthermore, the X seems to stand for ‘cross’, although you do not have to expect that the Aygo X suddenly becomes an SUV. However, you can expect cross elements on the model. Incidentally, it is probably done with the sloping nose of the Aygo, the Aygo X seems to get a higher Yaris Cross-like front.

The Toyota Aygo X will be on a shortened version of the platform that Toyota applies under the Yaris: the GA-B platform. Therein lies the viability of the model. As manufacturer after manufacturer exits the A-segment, Toyota hopes to make the Aygo X profitable by shortening an existing platform for its city car and taking advantage of economies of scale. The GA-B platform is located under the Yaris as well as under the Yaris Cross. Whether that also means that the new Aygo, just like its bigger technical brothers, will be available with hybrid powertrains, seems unlikely. There is a chance that the Toyota Aygo will become too expensive as a result.
