Toyota has shown a teaser plate of a new model that it will present on July 15. It’s not just a new model, but most likely a completely new generation of the Crown, a car that takes a completely different path than its predecessors.

The American branch of Toyota looks ahead through a teaser plate posted on Twitter at a new model that it will present in its entirety on July 15. The brand shows a headlight and part of the front bumper of the newcomer in a combination of red and black. In the database of the Japanese patent office, AutoWeek has surfaced the patent drawings of a new model that is very likely the soon-to-be-revealed Toyota.

Both the headlights and front bumper of the car on the patent plates match what we see on the teaser plate. The shape of the car is interesting, because it seems to be a relatively high liftback-like, a body shape that is attracting the attention of more and more car manufacturers. At least as interesting is the logo that we see on the front of the car. In contrast to the rear of the car, we do not find a Toyota logo there, but a crown. In Japan, Toyota has its own badges for many model lines that it sticks on the front of the cars. The crown belongs to the Crown, and that makes this new Toyota even more interesting.

After the top limousine Century, the Crown is currently the highest-positioned sedan in the market. The Crown – which was also sold in the Netherlands in the distant past – has not been supplied in the United States since the 1970s and so it seems very likely that the Crown is returning to the American market. However, the car exchanges its traditional sedan form for a body style that is laced with crossover influences. The current fifteenth (!) Generation Crown has been around since 2018 and is now about four years old. It seems that the four-door Crown does not yet need to be replaced. It is therefore quite possible that the ‘new Crown’ is an addition to the Crown family, although it is not inconceivable that Toyota will completely replace the traditional sedan with the new higher model given the popularity of higher standing cars. The closed grille, bZ4X-like headlights and missing exhaust tailpipes suggest that the new Crown will be an all-electric model. At the back left we see a flap, but this can be a loading opening as well as a tank flap. We’ll know more on July 15!
